hi all,

i found 2 problems difficult to solve, can u help me?

01. Two cars started from the same point and traveled on a straight course in opposite directions for exactly 2 hours, at which time they were 208 miles apart. If one car traveled, on average, 8 Miles per hour faster than the other car, what was the average speed for each car for the 2- hour trip?

02. A group can charter a particular aircraft at a fixed total cost. if 36 people charter the aircraft rather than 40 people, the cost per person is greater by $12. What is the cost per person if 40 People charter the aircraft?

also pls tell me an easy way to sort out such kind of problems..............

Soln.
Let the slower car go at an avg speed of a miles per hour. he faster car's speed is a+8..
In an hour the two cars will be 2a+8 miles apart. In two hours, 4a+16..
4a+16=208
a=48..
The two cars go at 48 and 56 miles per hour respectively.

02. A group can charter a particular aircraft at a fixed total cost. if 36 people charter the aircraft rather than 40 people, the cost per person is greater by $12. What is the cost per person if 40 People charter the aircraft?

Soln.
Let the cost per person for 40 people be 'a' $. So for 36 people it is 'a+12' $
Since the total cost of the charter is fixed.
40*a = 36 (a+12)
4a=36*12
a=$108..
